The following petition,' in corncetion with the application of M-ssra. liowstrd and Hill for a coal raining lease at Eden Creek, had, at the time of our goinj to press, received no h-ss than signatures, and will, we understand, he Torwarded by this day's post to Air. J. P. Armstrong, M.P.C., for presentation to the Government. It is also intended to forward contemporaneously a petition to Messrs. Dal jetty, X'ichol and Co., tie licensees or agents of the run, upon witch the coal seam is situ ite, requesting them to give their consent to t'le granting of the lease.: To the Provincial Secretary, Duiiedin. Sik, —We, the uu lersigned, residents of Naseby, desire to bring nude.- yo.ir notice an application addressed to l.iie' W.is'e Lands B*.irl by Messrs. Ilow.r! and llill | )r a coal mining lease on the IS leu Creek station. We fully recognise tie importance to the Moiiiit l.li district of the seam of coal now opened up by the perseverance of .Messrs. It)\vir I and Hill

I N'aseby hitherto has had to depend upon the ivyeburn coal pit, which, owing ion.ir.uril obstacles, has proved unequal.to the continuous and regular requirements of the district. Coal fro.n the i (a Burn, which is of an inferior .qmlity, an 1 supplied at a higher rate, has beeu used as an occasional auxiliary to the Kveburn, but is situated 12 miles from Xaseby, the last A of which, over ftotigii ttidge, are in winter almost impassable. The seam on the area applied for is ou the main road to the Dunstan, and distant only 8 miles from Naseby, the whole of the road being avail tble all the year round. We ap-trehend no objection being lodged by the runholder, as Messrs. Howard and lliil pr Hpec'je. I the groun I uu ler t!ie distinct assurance from the late manager, Mr. Scolan, that they (tlie prospectors) siiould receive the support .if the station in obtaining a lease of any coal which might be struck. Ws would further call attention to the fact that the area applied for is on tue main road, an I situate in tiie immediate vicinity of a creek which has been, and still is, in general use as camping ground for the dr.iys, and that consequently no legitimate objection can be raised to the granting of the lease to Messrs. Howard and' Hill on the plea of disturbing' the stock, or interfering with the station. An injunction has been recived-'by Messrs Howard and Hill from the Commissioner of* Crown Lands, to prohibit them from working toe seam, until their application has been con" '«y the Hoard. We would submit for your consideration the importance of our being" enabled to obtain a supply of coal before the severe weather peculiar to this district sets in, which might put Berious obstacles in the way of our obtaining such supply. We have no desire in any way to ignore the fact that the granting of the lease applied for may in some small degree prove prejudicial to the pr.'sent h lder of the coal mining lease situate on the Ida Burn ; at the same t'v.-e we respectfully submit I liat pub.ic co.isi le ations should be paramount, and not be made to subserre private or individual interests. We would take the liberty of requesting that you would cause it.quiry to bo made in the matter, and such steps to be taken as may in your opinion seem best adapted to eimb'e Messrs. Howard an I Hill to work the seam at Eden Creek at the earl.est possible moment. In conclusion, we desire to assure you of our confidence in .Messrs. Howard and Hill as persons in every way adapted to work the seam economically and to the advantage of the district. We are, sir, yours, &e*
