NEW ROAD FROM PIGROOT TC NASEBY.
We are glad to find that it is the intention of the Government to place upon the Estimates the sum of £6OOO to form a new road from the old fluming to this place. We regret, however, to hear that the same counsels which formerly recommended that the new line, instead of passing through a portion of Messrs. Sanders' run, and joining the present road just beyond Home Gully —as we have over and over again pointed out it should do—will be made to re-enter the present road at or about Douglas's accommodation house. By this means the Houndburn Hill will be avoided, but the distance will neither be materially lessened nor will the traffic be made to pass through this place, as it should undoubtedly be made to do when it could be done by inflicting no injury upon any but by actually conferring a positive benefit and advantage on all. We never, if we can avoid it, in the faithful discharge of our duty, make allusions which savour of the personal, but we cannot but hold that in the matter of this new piece of road the public weal has in some way and by some means been sacrificed to, and made to subserve private considerations and personal friendships. Feeling as we have ever done very strongly on the subject of this particular road," and the line it should take, we cannot for the life of us avoid speaking strongly, at the same time speaking what we think.
