CORONER'S INQUEST.

An inquest was held at the Melbourne Hotel, on Saturday, 25th inst., on view of the body of Margaret Cogan, who had been found drowned in the race of the Dead Level on the previous evening. • The following evidence was taken on oath:— Francis Michael Gilbert: I am a miner resident at Naseby. Knew the deceased child. Last saw her about five o'clock on Thursday evening, playing in the street near Brooke's store. Think there was another child with her, but did not recognise it. Dr. M'Cambridge deposed to the fact that he had seen the deceased, and that the body presented every appearance of death from drowning John Cogan: The deceased win* my daughter. I am a publican and reside at Nasebv. Deceased was about two years and three months old. I last saw her alive about three o'clock on Thursday' afternoon. Between four and five my wife drew my attention to the child's absence. I was not then alarmed, us ?he was usually away with other children. My wife sent the servant girl aiid children to search about the houses in the neighborhood, They came back and said they could not find her. I tjien searched about, ?md the neighbors did so likewise. Between hall'-past seven and eight o'clock the child was brought home dead —all wet and covered with sludge. It was marked, as at present, on the fate and knees.

Samuel Rogers : I am a miner, and reside at Naseby. X knew the deceased child, Margaret Cogan. On Thursdayevening last I went down along the Dead Level race to search for her. I found the child's body in the race, quite dead. It was at a point nearly opposite Kearney's place, about a mile, or rather more, from the town of Naseby. I saw the body taken out of the race. The body was lodged in one side of the race, and was slightly covered with sludge. A verdict of " Found drowned " was returned.
