SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING.

An adjourned meeting of the School Committee took place, at the school house, on Friday last, the 10th instant. Present: Messrs. Inder (chair), Grumitt, Bremner, Hay, Dixon, and Eoss. The Chairman stated that the last meeting had been adjourned for the purpose of enabling the Committee to receive report of the Sub-Committee who had been appointed to enquire into the matters connected with the method of teaching in the school, and with the school affairs generally. Mr. Bremner, on behalf of the Sub- ' Committee, handed in their report. IJpon the motion of Mr."Dixon, seconded by Mr. Soss, the report was received and adopted. Moved by Mr. Grumitt, seconded by Mr. Dixon—"That.the Secretary write a letter to the schoolmaster, embodying the report of Sub-Committee ; and also to Mr. John Creighton, with reference to his recent statement before the Committee." Carried.

Beports of schoolmaster for the months of January and February were received and adopted. Number of children in attendance, 69 —boys 36 girls 33. Letters were received from the Secretary of the Graiiirnar School, Lawrence, and the Schoolmaster, Queenstown, in reply to enquiries on school matters. Ordered to be acknowledged with thanks.

Proposed by Mr. Bremner, seconded by Mr. G-rumitt—" That the Secretary make application to the Education Board to grant the sum of £75 per annum, for a mistress for the Naseby School—a course which had been pursued with regard to Queenstown and other schools throughout the Province." Carried.

Proposed by Mr. Bremner, seconded by_ Mr. Hay—"That the Secretary write to the Education Board, informing them that there are, in this district, upwards of 1-10 children who are of a fit age to attend the Naseby School, without reckoning Kyeburn and adjacent places, where there are a number of children also of an age fit to attend tlie above school, and whose parents would be glad to send them if sufficient accommodation were afforded, and a proper staff.of teachers provided. That there is at present comfortable room for, say 40 to 50 children only. That the school house is also situate in' ail unhealthy locality, being in the midst of tailings and water. And that the Committee, therefore, request that a sum of not less than £2OO be remitted to them for the purposes of removing the present school house to the site reserved for that purpose and providing.further school accommodation; or to take the matter into their own.hands." Carried.

In answer to a question asked at the previous meeting, the Secretary stated that the school fees for the six months ended December 31, 1870, amounted to £is\> 19-s. Gd.

The Chairman handed in an account from AY. Nelson, for work done in connection with the school house, which had been paid by himself on behalf of the Committee, amounting to £1 155., which was passed for payment. Proposed" by Mr. I [ay, seconded h*

Mr. Bremner—"That an entertainment be got up, for the purpose of defraying current expenses and providing prizes for the scholars." Carried.
