Te Messrs. Newman, Graca, Dilloii iwl others signing. ih.9 Requisition... Gentlemen— la- reply to the Requisition with which I have bean favored, I beg to declare myself a candidate l'or the hs»or of'representing you. in the Provincial Council. I am not: unknown to many of the miners here and in. the Australian Colonies,. having been in Victoria since the commencement of the G-oldfields in 1851; and since 1861 I have in Hew Zealand as my, adopted home. I hare had an opportunity of visiting every Goldfielde township in the Middle Island, and making myself acquainted with the wants of the inhabitants. you place suoh great confidence in me » to return me to the Provincial Council as your representative, I will endeavor to do ay bent for the interest of the Province generally, and this District in .particular. | JBefore stating my- views on the political topics of the day, I may be permitted to say . that, had I not been requested to come for"ward by an influential and, numerously signed requisition, I should not have offered myself for your suffrages. I can assure you that I come forward, not from any private wish, but actuated by a conscientious desire to see the District and Province advance. If I know my own heart, it. has been this, and no selfish consideration, which lias induced me to place myself at your service. I can gain nothing by becoming a member of the Provincial Council —I may, so far as I am personally concerned, have something to lose. Therefore, I wish it to be distinctly understood that it is not for private gain I take this step, but because I, believe the political views which I hold would advance the District and Province generally. To commence : should I have the honor- to present this District I would not be an ob;ructionist, whoever may be returned as Superintendent. I make no pretension to be aittier a speaker or an experienced politician ; but J would apply myself to all questions befom the House with diligence, and give an frowst and independent vote. I wi& first touch on Provincialism, though,. X eonfen, there is such a conglomeration of Governments that it is difficult to tell where *ne ends and the other begins. Provincial government ms effected much good in the slt f but it hat »rved its diy, and to perpetuate that systtm in its present form pould be a curse rathir than otherwise. It & by far too costly, and I would be disposed to support a measure that would unite all the Provinces of the Middle Island under Gcvenuoent. I auy hern give an extract
