COMMERCIAL.
The wool sales ended on the 29fch. Near the close of the sales there were fresh buyers, and a more active Continental demand, sales closing with a firmer feeling. Only 50,000 bales are held over for the next sale, which takes place on the 2nd February. New Zealand wools are quoted at sd. to Is. 9d. Fine tallow is scarce. Quotations are, for beef, 445. per cwt.; for mutton, 435. 6d.
A vinegar-hearted old bachelor says he always looks under the head of " Marriages" for the news of the weak. ' One thing,' said an old toper, ' was never seen comin' through the rye, and that is the kind o' whiskey one gets'now-a-days.' A fop just returned to England from a continental tour, was asked how he liked the ruins of Pompeii. " .Not so very well," he replied," they are so dreadfully out of repair."
