ST. BATHANS.
December 11,1870. I regret having to record another \ accident to another of our miners— John Hanly. He had cot been long at work on Tuesday morning last when'he had: occasion toi shift the hose-pipe back from its position near the face, of his claim, and while -doing so a flake of earth suddenly fell from the face, a. portion of -which struck him to the ground without iniuriuir Mm, but, hefore he could get to jiirt feet, another Jump of earth fell on hia leg, breaking it close below the cali'. He was at once taken to the hospital, where the break was pronounced to he a bad one ; but I trust it will not cause him a lengthy detention in the hospital. He is a, young man, and that is much in his favor; Great hopes are entertained that the St. Bathans races will be well contested this time. There are ten horses booked for-the Handicap, and as plenty-of horses will be forthcoming for each of the other events, the only thing now to be desired is line weather.
The weather at present, unit! during the past week, although not of a nature Jto inspire hope in the minds of sporting men, has been just the sort to gladden the hearts of sluicers arid farmers, and may be described a3 composed of "half showers, half sunshine." Had I known there was to be such a rush of *« Sluice-Boxes " aud ". Ban- . shees " to your office, last, week, I should have treated myself"to a holiday and remained at home.
