ST. BATHANS.
October 17. On Monday night, the 10th instant, this locality was visited by a violent gale of wind, commencing about seven and ceasing about eleven or half-past eleven o'clock. Sheets of iron were blown off several houses, and some boxfluming was blown down and slashed to atoms. "Norah, the Pride of Kildare," had some of her "timbers shivered," but she gallantly braved the storm. At Blacks, I have heard that the damage done is very great. The weather since then is oi a more pacific turn, and a few days were even very fine. The lecture delivered by the "Rev. Father Eoyer, on the night of the 12th instant, was well attended. The lecture was well received, and the rev. lecturer was heartily applauded at its conclusion. A few songs by Mi*. Murray met with deserved applause, and one or two songs by Mr. Eagle were also well received. After the usual vote of thanks, &c., the crowd broke up and went their ways homeward, cogitating on the subject of the lecture—" Self Improvement." As reported by the correspondent of the ' Witness ' from here last week, the Scandinavian Company are after declaring a very handsome dividend. The same company have made a fresh start in their claim at Surface Hill, and speak confidently of being in a position to declare another respectable dividend by Kew Year's time. The other companies are proportionately well, and, with few exceptions, claim-holders generally are hopeful of good results between this time and Christmas next. Lliere is no falling off in the water supply so far. and this fact makes everything, even the tailings, go on swimmingly. Nasebv beer has been lately introduced here. It is agreeable to the palate, and likely to become a favorite with the St. Bathanites.—A.B.C.
