Up to the present, nothing of a startling nature has taken place here, tne great scarcity of amusement having a tendency to give bur township its pre-«en±_appearance—-viz., a town to let. However dull it may have been through printer months, I must say that the aeries : -bf amusements we have had lately has in some .degree given it a appearance. HiltotfV troupe gave an entertainment in the school-roomoofn f Saturday evening, which wag fully attended, and we. are also informed that Collins! Variety Troupe will perform this evening ;'_ - .' : Mining matterß are progressing favorably, water being plentiful nnd the ? -weather ffiue.. Our kludge channel irorks capitally, and for sdmle lionths past has given the miners ho ■whatever. October 2nd. A great sorrow aaa taken possession •of our little community on hearing from Mr. Hill,, who returned from Naseby.last night, that the illness of our much,-respected late townsman Mr. Gaffney, has developed itself into one •of an alarming nature. This sorrow is all the greater, because each individual jkere feels that he. can do nothing to ;alieviate the sore affliction which now presses on one who-*-until of late—under happier circumstances, behaved ;& friend to very many himself. May -the Great Disposer of events remember tim now <in his distress, and relieve i him speedily, is the anxious prayer of ,all his fellow townsmen, and of one in particular who'enjoyed''inuch of his -confidence.' . The St. Bathans Quadrille Assembly ,wound up their amusement for the reason with; a ball, which came off on Friday night last, the pianist of the Hilton party graciously treating them to first-class music during the night, v ()p last night Mr.,and Mrs. Hilton delighted all who went to hear them sing, /fne audience was rather small; and no wonder. The liberality of the good Ipedple Nof St. Bathans has been often arid heavily taxed inside of the las;t four wcjeks, and Collins,' troupe is in town on their way to Naseby. Whether they will perform here 10-morrow Bijrht or not I do not know; but if /they do, the novel and superior style of s£r. Collins' dau<-ing will probably .command a fair share of patronage. Qf mining news there is little.
