MOUNT IDA JOCKEY CLUB SPRING MEETING.
FIRST DAY. The weather on Tuesday last was anything but favorable to the inauguration of the first Spring Meeting of the Mount Ida Jockey Club. For some time past it had been warm and genial, and the anticipation of a fine day for the meet seemed to be fully justifiable. On Monday evening, however, the wind shifted round to the south-west, blowing coldly and fiercely during the entire night. On Tuesday morning the ground was covered with a light coating of snow or sleet, and the probabilities of a fine day were any-
thing but encouraging. Nothing daunted, the good folks of Naseby betook themselves to the racecourse — some in vehicles, soine on horseback, and a very large number on foot. The day remained on the whole fine, though cold throughout, tending thereby to" diminish considerably the - enjoyability of the day's sport. Tn spite, of this drawback, the course was well attended, the programme gone through . most successfully, and each separate , race well contested. We should ima* - gine, after the very successful issue of i the first Spring Meeting of the Mount Ida Jockey Club, there can be little •-■ reason to doubt that the gathering may henceforth be looked forward'to. as" one of the annual holidays of the district.' The various events, with the results, will be found below, from which it will- * be seen that more than one prize was gained by local horses. We observed that the sole booth on the ground appeared to be doing a thriving trade, thecoldness of the day tending to induce a more than usually largo consumption of P. 8., the effects of which made themselves very apparent in not a few instances. The first was the '■ '■? Maiden Plate, of 15 Sots., open to all hor* # that have never won an advertised race (hacks or otherwise). Entry, one sbir.*; No weight under 10 stone.
