THE DEAD LEVEL.

(To the Editor of tlie Mount Ida Cheoxicle.) _.-;.. Sir,—May I ask, through the columns of your valuable paper, if there is any truth in the. report that Mr. Pyke (in his capacity of Commissioner to enquire into the tailings question on the liogburn) has proposed, as a remedy, buying the Dead Level tail race as far up only as the lower end of Roach's Gully? '•..•■'■ . I give Mr. Pyke credit for better judgment in mining matters than to suggest in this case a scheme so useless, j say useless, because that portion of the Dead Level race which reaches only to Boach's Gully can be available to only a few miners, whereas if Mr. Pyke had proposed to purchase that tail race even as far up as to the back of Naseby township—say, five or six hundred yards farthec up -the Main .Gully 1 ,; still leaving the' Extended Company about; a quarter of a mile of, tail race, quite enough to catch their gold may, with very little additional expense, be made available to the miners generally. It is well known that, a large extent of payable ground lies along the sides and towards the head of Main Gully, on terraces and flats which, owing to the monopoly given to the Dead Level companies, cannot at present be wrought; but, which, if, anything like a storm channel were made—even as far up as-opposite the township—coula be. advantageously;worked, and, afford remunerative . employment to "scores of miners.—l am, &c.",- '''■■> - ' [ A PIGGEBI * ■'•
