Most satisfactory and encouraging reports have been received with reference to the Maerewhemia quartz reefs. It is said that samples of stone have yielded, on being crushed, upwards of four ounces to the ton.

With the exception .of those claims on Surface Hill commanded by the .water from the Extended and Hit or Miss Companies, mostly all the others are in full operation again, after a spell of nearly two months. During the week mostly all the miners set in to work, and are using' water at 40s. per head per week. "We understand that aE the water companies, with the two exceptions on Surface Hill, mean to reduce, or have already reduced, the price per head to 40s. The sale by auction, by Messrs. Inder and G-eorge, of the large and extensive stock of Messrs. Bremner Bros., in consequence of a dissolution of partnership, commenced on Tuesday last, and was continued on the following days. There was a large attendance each day at the sale, an immense quantity of goods were disposed of, and the prices realised were, we understand, considered satisfactory. It will be seen from an advertisement published in another column, that the committee recently appointed to draw up a programme of sports for St. Patrick's Day hare succeeded admirably. The ground selected for the celebration of the sports is Inder's garden, near the slaughter yard. As the programme is particularly attractive to all elapses of our community, we expect to see a large gathering. We understand that an application will be made to his Honor the Superintendent, for an extension of protection for claims situated on and in the neighborhood of Surface Hill. Owners of claims on this part of the workings have not yet started operations, no reduction having taken place in the price of water. The Dunstan District Races commenced on Thursday last. The weather was very favorable, and the attendance large. The following are the events of the first day :-4Maiden Plate, 50 sovs: Miss Ennis, I; Sir Charles, 2; Dick, 3.—District Handicap, *75 sovs: Wild Boy, 1.; Nelly Grey, 2 ; Cromwell, 3.—Handicap Hurdle Race, 75 sovs: Poison, 1; Don Pedro, 2 ; Harkaway, 3.—Town Plate, of 150 sovs : Foretop, 1; Atalanta, 2; Excelsior, 3. —Hack Selling Race, of 20 sovs, one mile heats : Dick, 1-1 j Doodlembuck, 1: Banshee, 2-2.

List of letters received during the month of October and November, 1869, at the post-office, Naseby, and remaining unclaimed on 28th February, 1870 :—Win. Burns, Mathew Hill, 0. A. Livingston, Stephen Murphy, "William Reed, Alfred Scarlet, J. W. Cambridge, James Flemming, Samuel Hall, Thomas Huneychuck, John Kennedy, Mr. Minnock, Gr. Pearice, Henry Smith. Me. Wakben Roßisrsosr visited St. Bathans on March Ist, as usual, and held a "Warden's and Resident Magistrate's Court. The eases were of no public interest. We report in another column the proceedings of the following day. We believe that managers of companies registered under the Mining Companies Limited Liability Act are not generally aware that, under .the provisions of the Act of last session, a new form of return has to be made and advertised, and that a breach of the act in this particular renders the manager of a defaulting company liable to - the heavy penalty of £2OO. These returns-will have to be published in the months of June and December, commeneinofin June, 1870. °

The police ave now employed under the new Jury Act in collecting the names of all persons eligible to be placed on the list for the present year. A sitting- of the District Court will be held on Wednesday, the 9th March. We are informed that there are two cases only for hearing, viz.:—Weiss and Others v. Dillon and Others on appeal and a plaint; Dillon v. Cunningham.

We observe that a concert and ball, in aid of the funds of the District School, Drybread, is to take place in the school-room there on Friday evening, 11th inst., under the direction of the St. Bathans troupe of serenaders.

We understand that it is the intention of i the Rev. J. Burchett to preach at St. Bathahs 1 next Sunday. Consequently, the usual morn- t ing service at the Union Church "will not be«( held, but the Rev A. Dasent, of Waikouaiti, I will conduct divine service in the evening. 1 Miss Dohly G-eeen and Mons. Eleury wer,e \ announced by posters to make their appearance < in the Masonic Hall here last evening, in their j monologue entertainment entitled " The Seven j Ages of Woman." As they did not make J their appearance, it is probable they may arrive 1 to-day. It is needless for us to bestow one ! word of praise in favor of these talented artistes, as they are both already so well known*. We have no do doubt whatever but that the entertainment Avillbewell worth a visit. Naseby is also to be favored soon with a visit froni the "inimitable" Thatcher.
