The next sitting of the District Court "will be ]i elcl at the Court Uouse, JSTaseby, 1 on Wednesday., 9th March prox. So far, we leliove, there are no cases either of appeal or otherwise. .. i "

We are glad to observe that tenders have heen called for for the extension of the telegraphic line to Kaseby. It is not, however, notified by which route the extension is to be carried—-via Palmers!on or via Dunedin. By whichever route obtained the extension cannot fail to be of immense advantage to this town and district.

Thatcher, the inimitable, proposes to put in an appearance here shortly. Coming, as he will in all probability do during the chilling influence of the strike, lie will not, we fear, stand that amoiint, of support which lie would, under other circumstances, receive. Si ill, there are, we fancy, few who will not find the means of hearing this inimitable local vocalist. Ik another column will be found the reply of the Superir.tehi'ent to the miners' petition. In compliance with their prayer, the abandonment clause of the Regulations has been suspended for one month, to be ended the 9th pros. Oiu\leader treats on tiiis subject. . We have been informed that John Lamont, accused of obtaining money by means of a valueless cheque, in Dunedin, was arrested on Monday lastby Sergeant-Major Moore near Sowburn. The .prisoner is in custody in the camp here, and denies that lie is the person implicated.

At the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, before 11. W. Robinson, Esq., R.M., Jas. Miles was charged with being drunk and disorderly on the 14th inst., and fined 205., or 24 hours' imprisonment; was also charged with assaulting and beating Thos. Q-race, atNaseby, on the 14th inst., and fined 405., or 48 hours' imprisonment. Thomas Lamont alias John Pi'im was brought up, charged with obtaining money, by means of a valueless cheque, in Dunedin. Discharged. Immediately upon his leaving the Court he was re-arrested, and will, we understand, be forwarded by next escort. [The remainder of the Court cases are held over till par next issue.]. Ax order in Council appeared in the Provincial Government Gazette,' of 9th February inst., revoking section 22 of Regulation xii. of the amended Rules and Regulations, 1870. The effect of this revocation will be that the water race holders will be .no longer .called upon to pay the previously existing tax of ss. pvr head per annum. We presume that the regulation referred to has been found to be ultra vires from its being contrary to the spirit of the Goldfields Act, 1569.

We understand it is in contemplation to get up a monster petition to the Provincial Council on the subject of the construction of a new road from Pigroot to Eden Creek, via Naseby. Copies of the petition will, we have been inforzhed, be furnished to all the up-country towns; and, considering that they will derive a large amount of "benefit in- the shape of reduction in freight, we cannot do otherwise than anticipate that the petition will be numerously and influentially signed. §sfTnE reports from the Cromwell reefs are more than usually exciting. . A telegram in the ' Daily Times ' states that in the Aurora claim 31bs. of stone had yielded 1 lb. of gold, and that " a ledge had been discovered which resembled a jeweller's shop." Great excitement is said to prevail in consequence.

The ' Police Gazette ' notifies that Mr. T. H. Sincock li-mS resigned liis appointment of Sub-Inspector of the Otago Constabulary. Mr. Sincock lias retired from the service, receiving compen sat ion at. the rate of one month's pa for each year's service. Mr. Sincock was

police officer of longstanding, having-, previously to liis connection with tlie Otago Constabulary (in which he served seven years), been employed in the Yictoria police force for a period of upwards of eight years. As with the swan in the fable, so with the Government 'Advertising Sheet? Its dying song has been its best, and the burden of that song its own death. It is officially notified that the publication of that lusus natures has been discontinued, and that hereafter the ' Gazette 5 wii] be forwarded to those persons to whom the ' Sheet' was previously supplied. The ' Government Gazette' notifies that the unsold lands in the township of Macraes will be sold by public auction, by the Government surveyor, Mr. .D. Barron, on. the 4tli March prox. In the list of officiating ministers „ under the Marriage Act, 1870, we notice the names of the Rev. Messrs. Dasent, Morris, and Burchett of this district.

Mk. Robixsox will'hold a Warden's Court at the Miterwhenua on Tuesday the 22nd' of February instant. There are, we believe, several water race, disputes to be adjusted. The ' .New Zealand Gazette,' of sth. inst., notifies tliat, a transcript of the bye-laws of the l oyal Naseby Lodge, No." 14, branch of Otago District, M.JJ.1.0.0.F., du]y certified, has been lodged with the Registrar of Friendly Societies, and registered and recorded in his ofiice under the provisions of the Friendly Societies Act, 1867. Dated 2nd Feb., IS7O. A. C. P. M'Donald for Registrar. The Mount Ida District School Committee met in the school-room on Monday evening last. Present.—Mr. W. Inder (chair), Messrs. Botting, Lovy, Roberts, Dickson, Hunter, Gillespie, and Ross. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read by Mr. Roberts, acting secretary, were confirmed. The chairman expiaiued that, it being an adjourned meeting, the first business was to elect officers for the current year. Mr. R. W. Botting was elected chairman, and Mr R. Ross secretary and treasurer. The schoolmaster's monthly report (Ist February) was read. It was proposed and carried that the report be returned to him for amendment. The Committee then arranged that their meetings be held on the first Monday in each montii. The secretary was instructed to furnish to the ' Mount Ida Chronicle ' a condensed report of the proceedings at the meeting—the editor-having kindly offered to publish the same.
