In the com-se of the evening, P.G-.M. Mr. J\ M'Kenna was equally fortunate ill receiving a handsomely engrossed testimonial from the Freemasons. The serenade of the brass band proved that the members appreciated the zeal and patience of one of their oldest and most unliriug members in bringing it to its present state of efficiency. We are glad to notice that the Mount Ida Cricket Club is beginning to show some symptoms of vitality. The annual meeting has been called for Monday, October 4th, at the Victoria Hotel.
We hear from the Kyeburn that Brown and M'Whirter's party, on Shepherd's Creek, have just had their first washing up, and that the favorable expectation formed of their new ground has been fully realised, tlie return of gold giving an average of at least one ounce per man per week. An" advertisement in another column notifies that, on and after Saturday, the 2nd Oct. prox the office hours of the iocal banks will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, with the exception of Saturdays, on which days the banks will re-open at 5.30 and close at 8 p in. A meeting- of the members of the Mount Ida Quadrille Club was held on Monday evening last at the Eoyal Hotel, when the various preliminaries for the carrying out the arrangements for the ensuing quarter were discussed. 'J he business transacted was the acceptance of t he Masonio Hall Company's offer for the use of their building for holding the assemblies, and the nomination of a Committee for the framing regulations and issuing invitations. The first meeting was arranged for Thursday evening ne^t. A Mkeying- of the Moiuit Ida Jockey Club, called by advertisement, took place at the Victoria Hotel on Monday evening last There was a good attendance, and a Committee of twelve was appointed. The eleotion of officers for the present season then took place, and Mr J. A. Douglas was re-elected President; Mr. Walter Inder, Vice-President; Mr. James Thomson, Treasurer ; and Mr. E. T. George, Secretary. A sum of fifty pounds was subscribed in the room. The weather, which had during the last five or six weeks, been beautifully fine and balmy,
underwent a change on Tuesday last. Thl wind became sharp and keen with squallß oJ sleet and snow. Indeed it appeared as thougll tlie winter was about to return in earnerfJ The mountains and liigli ground were cover® with, snow, and people began to ask themselves if these tilings were of a verity to be precursor of Saxby's great day —the otli October. Yen terday the weather again took up, and all Hal once more become fine, warm, and spring-like! We understand that it is the intention ofl the Mount Ida Jockey Club to hold their an-' nual meeting on the 13th and 14th of Jauuary instead of in February, as on the last occasion.
