AN EXPLANATION.

(To the Editor of the Mount Ida Chboxicle.) Sis, —Ail observation of our St. Bathans "own correspondent" this week induces me to correct the mistake lie makes in noticing on the " Terries." I value opinion of that gentleman and, therefore, hasten to assure him that, in my silly attempt at playfulness, after using the term " Freeze out," I had not the remotest intention of hinting at Latin quotations. It is conceded that " Shamrock " speaks the truth, and he does humbly trust that the force of truth id in no wise impaired whether it be spoken with or without "feeling." When " Shamrock " openly denounces a public swindle, and when " our own " advocates what would be a great public benefit, I consider that each, after Lis own fashion, performs the duty of a good citizen. I now shake hands with " our own," and as briefly as possible proceed to ansvver one or two queries which I have heard put in connection with the same letter. Does " Shamrock " condemn all amusements ? " Shamrock " does nothingfof the kind, for there is no person more fond of dancing than lie; but what" Shamrock " does emphatically condemn is the conduct of the dancer who "pays the piper" with another man's money, while he neglects or refuses to pay for the bread he has eaten. " Shamrock " is certain that no upright man will blame him for holding up to scorn sucli a man. That such unprincipled conduct meets no sympathy from the majority of miners was fully proven the other night by the warmth with which they cheered its censure, expressed in the clever local song composed and sang by Mr. J. G-rierson, on the occasion of the darkies' entertainment. I am happy to say the concert was a great success, and highly creditable to the talent of the darkies generally.—l am, &c., . Shamtiock;.
