THE ESCORT.

The folio-wing were the amounts forwarded to Dunedin from the various diggings bv the last escort :

Want of space compels us to hold over our report of the Eesident Magistrate's and Warden's Court till our next issue.

We that there has been no slight commotion in this neighborhood in consequence of a number of cattle having been mustered and sent to the pound at Waikouaiti by Mr. Chapman. No doubt much trouble and inconvenience will be inflicted upon many persons by this act of Mr. Chapman's, still,*knowing the exact position of affairs with regard to these runs, persons have only themselves to blame if they fail to make the necessary arrangements with the holders of runs for the depasturing of their stock. Out of evil good frequently arises; and, though a little courtesy might have been shown by the publication of a notice of the intention to impound, still the result will have the effect of putting people on their guard, and making them more careful for the future.

The theatrical (?) company, whose advent we announced in our last issue took their departure on Monday last, having played both on Friday and Saturday evenings. The only remark we Gan make of the performance is that the les3 said about it the better. The sole redeeming point in the whole affair was the playing of Mr. Irving upon the harmonium —an instrument totally unsuited to such occasions.

We have to acknowledge, with thanks, the receipt of the fourth and fifth annual reports of the Otago Acclimatisation Society.

A serious accident occurred last week at the Eyeburn, to the daughter of Mr. C Hubbard of that place. It appears that while preparing dinner a tin dish, containing boiling fat, was left upon the table. This dish was by some accident upset, and the boiling contents thrown over the neck, breast, and ai-ms, of the young girl, scalding lier in a very serious manner: Kerosene oil was immediately applied, and tie effect was, we understand, almost magical, there being, two hours after its application, barely the mark of where the scald had been. The efficacy of kerosene oil in cases of burns and scalds is not so generally known as it should be, and the instance above given is only another to the long list of cures which have been effected by its instrumentality.

We Lear tliat the price of meat at Kyeburo is likely, in consequence of competition, to be materially lowered. It is anticipated that mutton -will be sold shortly at 3d per lb. The price charged for beef is 6d. and 7d., and we understand that it is not improbable that the Eyeburn butchers will supply the Naseby market with beef at the above prices. In* another column will be found the judgment delivered by Judge "Wilson Gray at St. Bathans, on Saturday last, in the appeal case Scandinavian Company v. O'Connor and Grilmour: His Honor, in delivering judgment, which was for the respondents, notified that he would deliver formal judgment at Naseby at the next sitting of the District Court, Bth September.

We understand that Mr. Michael Sylvester Duffy, who was non-suited in his action against the Victoria Company (Hyde), at a recent sitting of the Warden's Court, Naseby, has entered an appeal in the District Court at the next sitting.

Tjhe snow has now disappeared excepting from the tops of the high mountain ranges, and the days are nearly as genial as those of spring, being bright and balmy. Prosta at

night still continue, bul noting lite so severe or intense as they A few more weeks and we sliall in all probability have spring in earnest upon us. The water races are again freed from the iron grip of the heartless king, and the-supply of water is abundant. There has beeniio little snow tliis winter, and so-little remains at the present on the. mountains, that there are not wanting tbose inclined to predict a bad suininerseason for the Hogburn. Scarcity of water is no doubt one of the greatest difficulties, if not the greatest difficulty, with which this district has to conf tend. The winter, however, has not passed, though fast ebbing away. We may have yet further falls of snow to cap the liills, or Ve may perhaps have a wet summer. So far as we are able to judge there does not appear to be anything to iustify croaking. We observe by a return published in the * Otago Government Gazette,' of 28th July • ulfc., that the amount of revenue realised by the Dog Tax during the quarter ended 30th June, 1869, was £1477 Os 6d. We are glad to learn that the operations of the Ida Yalley Company at the reefs have b|'e(| resumed, and are being pushed on Wc trust that, under a new proprietory anil with better management the speculation may-' yet prove a success.?
