“I’m not going to have, you sitting there grinning at me,” said the Mayor, the llev. J. K. Archer, to (Mr. A. Marshall at a gathering ,o£ the unemployed in the Christchurch City Council Chambers recently. “Police, put that man out.” There were shouts of protest from the men as the police advanced, and it looked as if there was going to be a light. Mr. Marshall was • seized round the necjk by a plainclothes constable and ejected from the room. A sergeant of police produced a truncheon, and in the sculfle one man w ent down/ “There’s not going to be any funny business to-day,” said the sergeant. “If you start anything you’ll regret it.” In a minute or two peace was established. Outside in the street, after the meeting, Mr. _ Marshall got up to speak and was* hustled down by the police amid angry booing.
