A. resident of Wiaipukurau lias received information from Hobart that he had won a hi" prize. The patriotism of -the New Zealand people, their love of flowers, and their openness of character are three qualities which have "really impressed Lord Barnby, the English industrial leader. Approximately 100 applications have been received by the Farmers' Union for the position of area c.llfeer for Wellington-Taranaki. These have been narrowed down to two and the appointment will be niade this week. During the examination of a bankrupt at Timaru creditors were surprised to hear that bankrupt’s furniture, which he valued at £4O, was insured for £2OO. Banlkinpt stated that he paid £BO for the furniture, new, and he had not added to it in anv way. *nm u The inaugural flight of the Hamilton Gliding Club ended disastrously on Sunday, when the machine nose-dived from a height of 30 feet. Mr. Jas. Hunter, the pilot, 23, was badly bruised and shaken. Failing in an attempt to in iso the machine by man power, •it was hitched on to a motor truck. The machine then rose, banked hud fell to the ground with considerable force. A fatality occurred at the Wangiinui railway yards on Saturday (iuiing shunting operations, when a shunter named .John Alfred YVjoolnough, aged 44, had both his legis severed as the result of a wagon passing oyer him. The injured man was engaged in letting a wagon into one of the shunting roads, and had either turned or was about to turn the points when i lie oncoming wagon caught him. First aid wais immediately applied and he was conveyed to the hospital, where his condition gradually became weaker, and he died. He leaves a wife and family of five children. ; Should an employee of one local body become a member of another local foody? This question was recently asked of the Auckland City tCbuncil by one of its staff, who stated that he had been requested at various times by ratepayers of the Ellerslie town district, where he lived, to foe a candidate for a seat on the Town Board. He asked for permission (<> do so, if a vacancy occurred, said he would abstain from voting ■upon any contentious matter that might arise between the council and the board. The Council decided that it was undesirable that any of its employees should become members of local bodies, and the request was not granted.
