Entrenchment among' the staff; of the Defence Department appears to have commenced in earnest (says the Dominion), and it is 'known that the salary envelopes received by several staff officers on Saturday morning also contained notices terminating their services. iWe have ’been shown by Mr. George Windsor, “the Official Handbook of New Zealand, being a collection of paper's by experienced colonists on the 'Colony as a whole and on the several provinces.” The book was published in 1875 and edited by Julius Vogel, C.M.G., and contains interesting photographic reproductions of the principal cities' and a. historic review of the colony up to that year.
