UNEMPLOYMENT BOARD’S ALLOCATIONS.
£20,000 distributed. As a' result of the Unemployment Board’s offer to local authorities of subsidies up to a total of £25,000 on'the basis of £2 for £1 as a special expediency measure for the relief of unemployment oyer the Christmas, season, a considerable number of applications were received and considered. Up to Friday, when 'the board held its last meeting for the week, allocations amounting to £19,350 hajve been made by the' board and approved by the Minister of Finance. The boat'd is only recommending subsidies on works carried out with money derived from other than Government sources. LOCAL COMMITTEE'S,
SUGGESTED CONSTITUTION.
Tlio board has adopted suggestions made, 'by the (North Taranaki Unemployment Belief Committee, whieh has set out the functions of the committees as follow: — (l).'To collect and collate information affecting the problem of unemployment in the dis-
tinct. (•2) To organise individual effort. on the part of residents of the district with the object of liuding temporary worjlc for unemployed men, it duly for a few days at a time, on farms, gardens, and in such other avenues as opportunity may occur.
(3) To co-operate with and to assist existing organisations which are administering relief.
(4) To administer any fund granted by the hoard to the committee for the purpose of subsidising, on a £ for £ basis labour engaged, by any farmer in the dis-
trict through -the committee for works on his. farm leading to increased production therefrom, and .coming within the following description: (a) Felling of bush and ploughing and grassing down of new areas on the farm; (b) stumping; (e) the draining of swamps; (d) harvesting: of grass and crops. (5) To exercise a general supervision over all labour engaged through the committee. (t>) To co-operate with the ■board in all matters related to relief of unemployment as the board may.from time to time require. .
(7) To keep a. register setting out particulars of work offered to any unemployed man, stating whether he accepted such work, and if so whether lie made a reasonable effort to give satisfaction. (8) To report to the board the names of any men declining work or deliberately performing their work in an unsatisfactory manner.
(9) To appoint local committees in various parts of the districts, the duties of each local committee to be as follow: (a) To obtain and supply to the Central Committee local information required by it iu regard to any of the functions of the Central Committee as above enumerated;, (b) to supervise any labour engaged through the Central Committee for worths in the subdistrict in which the local committee functions; (e) in all matters relating to the relief of unemployment in the sub-district to cooperate with the Central Committee in such manner as the Central G'ojnmittee shall from time to time indicate.
