CAUGHT WIITH I .JEWELLERY.

Five charges, two of theft and three of breaking and entering by day were preferred against Arthur Victor Jones, alias .John Jones, a. labourer, with no fixed abode, in the Magistrate’s lO'ourt at Palmerston North yesterday. On the first two charges of the theft of a pair of field-glasses arid case at Daimevirke, and overcoat, spanner ami road-guide, accused was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, the terms to bo concurrent.

Breaking and entering .by ' day ami committing the theft; of jewellery to the value of £l5B 14/-, the property of 11. D. G. Morlensen, jeweller, of Palmerston North; breaking and entering the offices of the Dannevirke Borough Council, mid stealing cheque, stamps and money, to the value of £1; and breaking and entering the olliee of the Palace Theatre in George St., Palmerston North, and stealing six torches, a handling, and a book ■to the value of £2 10/-, were the three charges on which .Jones was remanded to appear at the Supreme Court a.t Wellington for sentence. ‘Detective Russell said that on the evening- of Sunday last, in company with Senior-Detective Quinkie, accused was questioned in Church Street in regard to the jemmy and the hacksaw that he was carrying. He had also had in his possession the jewellery and the torches, which lie admitted that lie had stolen. When searching accused at the station after his arrest they had found the cheque and the stamps from the Dannevirke Borough Council in accused's possession. He had stated that he had found them, 'but laleir admitted the theft. Accused pleaded guilty to the charges.
