PALMERSTON NORTH CITY CELEBRATIONS.
■Speaking at the Palmerston X. city' celebration, business men’s luncheon at Palmerston North yesterday, Mr. Liiiklater said he was honoured indeed in having tin* opportunity to say a few words at the first function of the celebrations. He conveyed to the cili/.ens of’ Palmer. spin North the congratulations of the people of Maimwata on the promotion of the town to city status. He added that: the farming community could lay claim to a certain amount of kudos in connection with the advance made, and especially the pioneers, who had left a glorious heritage.*, “New Zealand is at present in the doldrums so far as the primary industries are concerned,” said Mr. Liiiklater, “and we want to know what is to be done about it. Pkices are Imek to the 1914 level,'hut the cost of production is 60 per cent, in advance.” 'He went on to speak of the large amount of artificial silk, the greatest competitor of wool, that was imported into the country, and advanced the ojpinion that it was up to the people to buy more woollen goods. As a family man, he 'knew that women preferred artificial silk to Wool, but lie hoped that if the matter were put to them they would make some sacrifice to help along a good cause. “In this connection,” added Mr. Liiiklater, “the same applies to British goods, for British manufacturers are obtaining their requirements within the Empire and it is up to us to support the United Kingdom.” ITe wished Palmerston North every prosperity ami success.
