BETWEEN the Rnngitikoi and Manawatn rivers along the sea coast to a depth inland of, say, half a mile (here are thousands of acres of waste land —consisting of sand dlines and drift. Beyond (his limit the land under scientific. treat meat can be and in some instances is. converted into good grazing coiintirv. .Now about, this waste area along the sea coast. II ha.been proved that the area is suitable for afforestation purposes. .Just picture this vast, area forest clad! What potential wealth tor the State. The Government is exploring avenues to ‘ provide work for the unemployed and thousands of pounds have been expended by way of subsidy on wodks that have no lasting benefit. Yet here is the opjiorlunity for the Government to give employment -to numhei'S oi men with the assurance that in the vears to come every pound expended will he returned tenfold. The
acquisition of this land by the Government would not he a costly item and young I fees could lie obtained from the nurseries hontrolled by the Forestry Department at Tangimoana, and further nurseries if necessary laid down. We understand that the Chamber of iCommerce will discuss this matter at its next meeting when it is hoped that something definite will he forthcoming to submit to the Government.
