NGATIMAMOE TRIBE.
STORY DISCREDITED. A Dunedin correspondent of the Auckland Star telegraphs as under to that journal:— An authority on Maori lore and a full-blooded chief, lloani Matin, dues not believe the suggestion that a remnant of the Ngatimainoe tribe still lijves in the remote fiordland of the Wes! Coast. He stated that do about the year 1(15(1, his own trilic. had fought and defeated the Xgatimamoes at Five Rivers Plain. The, Ngatimomoes lied to To Anna, where they were again attacked by the Ngntalius, and again defeated. Another small battle took place at Colac Bay, and once more the Ngalimamoes suffered defeat. The remnants of tin l trible were then 'absorbed bv the Ngatalnis and were intermarried with their conquerors. Nearly all the full-blood-ed Nga lima times left now resided ai Otago Heads.
