London, October 29,

The dentil is announced of Ma-jor-General Horatio Gordon Robley, veteran of the Maori War, at the age of DO. (Horatio Gordon ltobley was born at Funchal, Madeira, on 28th June, 1840, the son of Captain John Horatio .Robley. Following - in his father's footsteps he joined the Army, was an Ensign in the Durham Infantry in 1858, served in Burma 185.0-63, and in the Maori War 1804-60, being present at Gate Pa and other engagements. After serving in various capacities in other parts of the Empire, he retired from command with the rank of Major-General. During the whole of his long service of some thirty years lie had many of his drawings and sketches published in the English illustrated papers. Those of Maori war time were bought by the New Zealand Governmerit and are now in the Dominion Museum. He owned a remarkable collection of preserved Maori tatooed heads and curios, which were later dispersed to various museums. He was a member of the Veteran Association of the sth New York Infantry, Duryee Zouaves, and of the Tauranga Savage Club and the Polynesian Society. He wrote a book on Moko or Maori Tabooing - in 1896.
