GAOL FOR CAR CONVERSION.

Auckland, October 20. Leslie Philip Sinclair ITaynes, who converted three motor cars to his own use. for the purpose of travelling to Miangero ;aerodrome so that lie could learn flying, yesterday moirning appeared before Air. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court and was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment, to be followed by two years’ probation, and was ordered to make restitution of £39 S/7. “I have -carefully considered this case and I have received a report from the probation officer,” said Mr. Hunt. “Every possible tiling that could have been said in favour of Haynes lias been said, but accused is 29 years old and is quite old enough to know better. This is an offence that is prevalent throughout the Dominion, llaynes did not commit this offence once or twice, but he did it three times, and, if -the police report is right, he drolve one of the cars many thousands of miles. He must have driven it morning, noon and night. “In such a case as this,” said the Magistrate, “I could not possibly extend probation. The probation officer himself does not recommend it. Car conversion in New Zealand must be stopped.”
