LEVIN-FOXTON HIGHWAY.
PROPOSED DEVIATION AT WiHIROKIXO. 'TRAFFIC TALLIES TO BE TAKEN. • In a letter referring to the proposed deviation south of tin* Whirokino 'bridge, on the LevinFoxton Highway, the District Engineer (Mr. R. 11. P. Eonaynei asked the Horowlienua County Council, if it had taken recently any traffic tallies over this length of highway. This inforniaiton, lie stated, was required to ascertain ■whtft-her this proposed deviation would he an economical proposition.. If a recent tally 'had not been taken, he suggested that one he taken at Hie earliest opportunity —say, for a period of three days, making it continuous from a Thesday morning to a Friday morning. Another tally could also he taken during the holiday season. m The proposed deviation is on the third and last section of the road ■ from Levin to the I\ liirokino bridge. The County Engineer, in his monthly report, stated that the formation of the second threemile section was nearing completion. Foundation metalling was completed for a distance of 1 mile (it) chains.
• The County Chairman said he thought that the suggestion contained in the letter was a wise one. If one tally were taken at an early date and another during the holiday period, the Department would lie given a fair idea of the traffic. The Council thought that the deviation should go through. He moved that the matter of the traffic tally he referred to the County Engineer.
In reply to a question by Cr. Cat-ley, the Chairman stated that a week’s tally on (lie Levin-Shannon Highway had cost TIG.
The Engineer slated lliat the Highways Board .would pay twothirds of the (lost of (lie proposed lajly, and the Council's share of the cost would he about two guineas.
.Cr. Jensen said that at times there was vcirv heavy traffic, such as that of lorries, on the Foxton Road ; these vehicles look up more room than cars did. If everything was taken into consider.!!ioii, the Council could not expect so layonnthle. it- tally there as on (lie Main South Road.

Cr. Ryder: If we'have a. Hood, I lie Mutineer should postpone the tally. Tlie Chairman: Yes. /Cr. Jensen: Will we have to eontribute our share, towards the deviation ? The Chairman: Yes, on a three to one basis. Cr. Jensen: A heavy expenditure to us. The chairman: We have made provision for it; it is in the estimate. Cr. Jensen: I hope the Finance Committee will look into this highway question. The chairman: We won't spend any more money than we have authority for, because we cannot. Cr. Jensen: We have a lot of roads to make. iWe want to been ref til. Cr. Bather asked if, on the deviation ‘being- made, the Council would close the old road. The Chairman: I don’t think we can. Cr. Barber: It gives ’ access to some farm#. The motion was carried.
