FLAX AREA IN FLAMES.

MANY ACRES DESTROYED.

Fire destroyed 150 acres of growing flax at Pongakawa (Te Kuiti) last Saturday evening. During the afternoon Messrs Olliver Bros, were engaged in burning and clearing a small portion of land for replanting. A strong wind sprang np and spread the fire in the direction of land planted in phoxmium tenax on the Wlaiki swamp area, ■ which was soon enveloped in flames, which sent up bursts of thick, oilyj black smoke. The dry manuka scrub added to the intensity of the fire.

With the arrival of' assistance the iiaiues lost their extensive hold and 30 men beat back the lire for nine hours. The tire-beaters were greatly aided by an area of plough; ed land, which restrained the advance of the flames.

The, heavy fumes aud heat were overpowering and the men were forced to Lake refuge in the drains at intejryaiSite Tihe portion destroyed included 6000 'acres held under Government iease, reserved for fiaxgro vying, and owned by Messrs Oliijver Bros., who will be heavy losers.
