LOWER WAGES BETTER THAN DISMISSALS.

‘Discussing the economic situation in relation to wages, Mr. J. W. Graham, retiring president of Ihe IClanterbury Employers’ Association, asked which was the better course to follow —to discharge surplus workers, or to continue to employ all at. a somewhat lower rate? The latter was the solution, provided, however, that the rates not only of those coming under the awards of the Arbitration Court, but those of all officers and employees, should be reduced, and that the savings should be passed on to clients tby reduced selling prices. Numerous eases could be quoted from Australia, where the introduction of lower hourly rates was conferring benefits on the community, in the constmction of roads and other works, and the savings effected were being provided for in the estimates, creating extra employment for men who wonld otherwise be at the door of starvation.
