UNEMPLOYMENT BILL.

Taking a line from their Socialist brethren in Britain, the Labour Parly attempted to amend the Unemployment Bill so as to bring boys of Hi and upward within its scope (says the Dominion). This demoralising suggestion was very properly rejected by the House. It is ilmd enough in a young and de- \ eloping country to be considering giving a sustenance dole lo grown men who cannot he placed in work. Much worse would be to begin to sap the independence and self-re-liance of hoys in their “teens.” Not only would they he taught at an impressionable, age not to fend for themselves and to look lo the State for a pittance; hut their parents would be freed of a responsibility to help their boys to get a footing in the workaday world. Prom that it would not be a long step to the Socialist ideal of State nurseries dud the separation of parent and child from birth. It is far better that a boy should endure a little hardness under the spur of necessity than that he should start his career as a State pensioner at sixteen.
