RECLAIMING SAND DRIFT

WITH MARRAM GRASS AND LUP IN. • The manner in which sand drift can the stopped and the country reclaimed is very much in evidence on Mr. J. M. AlcKokio's property at ■Carnarvon. At Thursday's meeting of the Alanawatu Rabbit Hoard Mr. McKelvie told members that at one time a drift had extended from Tangimoana as far inland as the nursery adjacent, to his homestead, which covered many acres of his farm. He had successfully checked its progress, however, and ultimately reclaimed the land by means of marram grass. After this grass obtained a hold lupin was sown and with 'tile lupin-came the grass. The whole area was now well grassed and the marram grass was nil dead. It was a peculiar thing that once the grass obtained.a hold the marram died, but 'if the area was fired it would show up again. Mr. AlcKelvie said that experiments with marram had shown, him that there were certain 'kinds to plant and certain kinds not to pJai.it. Lupin he had also found invaluable and was still planting it on certain parts of bis property where reclamation, w ork was in progress.
