RAILWAY “CUTS.”
G’BEYTOWN BRANCH TO GO. The Government’s intention to close several unprofitable railway lines in live South Island was announced yesterday bv the Minister "f Railways, TTon. Wj A. Veiteh. The Eyreton branch. Afossburn branch, and Tnatnpere-Ora wui extension will be closed on August 23. Certain other lines set down lor closing, such as s (lie ALumt Somers-Spring-burn, the HeriotEdievaln, and the Wy mill am-Glen-ham lines, will lie closed as soon as departmental arrangements in the wav of transfers of staff and plant can be made and subject to reasonable notice being given. Tim lines from Oxford West to Sheffield, Kurmv to Tfakatnrnmen. Windsor lo Tokarahi, a Hit the Capo Eouhvind branch, said the Minister, had already been closed. “Tu the North Island,” said Mr. \ciloh, “it is intended to close down the Grey town branch as soon as necessary arrangements are complete. The date of closing will be announced later. Some additional economies are being- considered in connection with other unprofitable lines.”
