ROUNDING UP BOOKMAKERS.
HEAVY PENALTIES INFLICTED AT WELLINGTON. Wellington, August 4. Before Mr. Woo ward, S.M., today, Ralph Ellis Thompson, aged 50, and Thomas Phillips, aged 58, pleaded guilty to bookmaking charges. The Magistrate said that Phillips was convicted three months ag'o, when he was fined £250. Thompson, also, had two convictions, and was lined £2OO previously. fXho. Magistrate fined each defendant £3OO, in default six months’ imprisonment. TELEPHONES DISCONNECTED. Wellington, August 4. ■ 'Consequent on a, statement made in Parliament regarding the illegal use of telephones for purposes of hotting, the Post and Telegraph authorities made a move in Wellington to-day. It is understood that a number of telephone connections about which suspicion has existed will be disconnected forthwith. TWO FINED AT WANGANUI. Wanganui, Last Night. Frank Sanko aiid Matthew Car,rol described by the police as moderate bookmakers, were fined £lO each, in default one month.
