SAILORS AS JOCKEYS.

novel race meeting. ROYAL NAVY PARTICIPATES. In honour of the recent .visit of 11.M.5. Dunedin to Nukualofa, Tonga, the Tongan Racing Club organised a special race meeting. The weather was ideal and a record crowd attended. Of course, the horses were not up to the standard seen on New Zealand courses, but the entliusiasin of the Tongan racing fraternity was quite equal to that of Dominion followers. Two of the events were dedicated to the Navy, the officers and men of the Dunedin acting as jockeys. The sailors’ race was the cause of much amusement. Fifteen horses lined up, and were despatched in fairly good style. En route to the winning post several minor accidents occurred, and not a few of the men finished on foot. The race was won by Signalman Nixon, whose mount heat; the second horse, ridden by Samuel McLean, by a length. This event provided the largest dividend of the day.

The officers’ race was won in splendid style by Licut.-Commander Terry, closely followed by Commander Jeffries. Commodore G. Blake was placed third, being two lengths behind the winner. Musical, items were rendered by I he cruiser’s band.
