TALKIES IN THE HOME.

APPARATUS SHOWN IN LONDON.

London, May 29

Fiver since talking films started there have been intermittent rumours of “talkies in the home." The technical obstacles are not formidable. All that is needed is a miniature film projector—coupled with a synchronised gramophone turnla hie, and a supply of miniature films and ordinary gramophone records, synchronised for use together. The chief reasons why an apparatus has been slow iu coming on to the market are the difficulty of manufacturing it at an attractive price, and, still more, the difficulty of producing a supply of syneronised films and records to meet a demand which at first would be \erv restricted.

However, America has already embarked on this new field, and ail apparently efficient home talkie apparatus was shown by Dallmeyer at the Photographic. Fair in London ibis month. An ordinary type of miniature film projector is set on a baseboard, which also supports an electrically driven turntable and an ordinary electrical “pick-up.” The film is threaded through the projector until the word “start” comes mi the screen. The “pick-up” needle is then lowered on to a. tiny mark on tlie edge of the record. All that remains is to turn the switch that puts the projector and the turntable in motion. Current foithis purpose, and for lighting the projector, is obtained simply by plugigng into the electric light supply. The “pick-up” can be connected with any loudspeaker placed behind the screen.
