An important conference o|'\ country newspaper proprietors was held at Hamilton yesterday. The majority of newspapers in the North Island were represented and important business discussed. The usual annual lea and prizegiving in connection with the local Brethren Sunday school was lield in tin* Town [fall supper-room on Thursday evening. Kathleen Leach won tlic special prize and prize for highest marks and Percy Leach annexed Ihe prize in the boys-section.

West, of Palmerston N., had a narrow escape from serious injury on Wednesday, lie was driving his ear lo Wellington when it li ft the road at the had bend south oj the Whirokino Bridge and crushed into the drain. Fortunately, Mr. West, although badly shaken, was unhurt. His car was badly damaged, however, and he had to return to Palmerston North by train from Levin.
