MONTHLY MEETING. : : 1 The Manawatu County Council met at iSanson on Tuesday, Council], or W. E. Bariber presiding-.; There were also present Councillors H. H Hunit, J. Boyce, W. E. Pearce, F. J. -MJcKelvie and J. H.' Perrett. Leave of absence was granted to Cr. D. W. Reid. (CORRESPONDENCE. The following- correspondence was dealt with: — .Prom the Public Works Depart»y brent forwarding copy of proclama - tion, .proclaiming a road ait Taugimoana.—Received. Prom the Main Highways Board outlining the policy with regard to subsidies in connection with construction and maintenance of high-ways.—-The chairman briefly reported on .the hoard’s deliberations respecting its estimates and said that the proposals placed the allocations on a satisfactory basis. TRAMWIAY MANAGER’S . REPORT.
The tramway manager reported as follows:—‘The, chief items of
trafficv'for the ■rnonth-of. June were: \ —‘Grain, 7 tons; minerals and manure, 192-1 tons; general merchandise 45i tons; Cheese, 158 crates; i-ggs, 61 crates, cream, 21 cans; v sheep and pigs, 33' trucks; metal, 10 ■i rutiles; timber, 11,214 s.ft.; wool, ' 48 bales; flax fibre, 47 bales; fares collected, 15/5. The accounts show a debit balance of £l2O 15/1. —Received. TRAFFIC INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The traffic inspector (Mr. W. Berry) reported as follows: A. fair amount of gorse has now been cleared from the roadsides throughout the county. During the month several informations were laid for • various offences as follows. One ■ lorry driver was fined £5 for carrying a greater- load than that allowed by his license, while one person for driving a ear without a license was fined 20/- and costs. Another, for cutting the corner .at Sanson was fined 20/- and costs, and two persons, for allowing stock io wander were fined 15/- and 20/respectively. A number of offenders will be dealt with during the ensuing month, while one lorry owner will be charged with failing to procure heavy traffic licenses for his lorries. Three others will be charged with rising their lorries under an expired license. 'Building permits to the value of £905 have been applied for and fees amounting to £2 5/- collected. Pines during tihe month amounted to £8 15/-. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The county engineer (Mr. H. V. Bond) submitted the following report : :. / , Main highways maintenance: — The metalling contract is progres- . sing satisfactorily on the Foxton - Shannon road between Bdwe’s road and the Manawatu. The whole V ; v' : length of this road has been graded. Flood notices are now complete -and on the site and will be erected at Whirokino immediately. Shouldering -hag also been (Carried ■4 out on the iWhirdkino road and the »; surface has been graded. The contract foi- surface metalling from Bainesse. station to the Oroua fiver bridge on the Himatangi-Rangiotu road has been commenced and grading has been carried out throughout.
All the main highways have been graded and maintained, as usual. .. JVletal soundings have been taken on the Himatangi-Sanson highway. 'f, &, > ' KIDINOS. Awahou The metalling contract for. the metalling of Bowes, Poplar and Kari Kari roads has been completed. Numbers T and 2 lines have been graded. ... Tramway. —General repair and maintenance work has been earned ' out. A ; section of line under the •hoppers at the crusher has been renewed:. and concreted in owing to the .continual flow of water coming from the crushing plant. All of the surplus old rails have now been 1 disposed of to ratepayers. Received.
