RELIC OF COOK’S VOYAGE.
OLD MEDALLION FOUND. Blenheim, Yesterday. An interesting- find was made on the Wjairau (bar, on the site of an extensive old Maori pa, hv Charles Woolf, nephew of the Harbour Board's pilot, Captain Vendore. It is a. medallion. struck to commemorate the departure from England in 1772 of Captain Cook’s ships, the Resolution and Adventure. The obverse side has a representation of the head of King George ITL, with the words “George HI., King of Great Britain, France, and Ireland,’’ etc. On the reverse side is a representation of two ships, with the legend “Resolution and Adventure sail from England, March, 1772.” Captain Cook brought some of tiie medals with him and presented them to high Maori chiefs, urging them to wear them as a mark of favour of the Great White King. ICopies of this medallion, one ot gold and one of bronze, are in the Turnbull Library. The gold one, rather worn, was found at Queen . Charlotte Sound many years ago.
