CANNOT STOP AT LEVIN.

MAIN TRUNK LIMITED EXPRESSES. . Replying to Mr. J. Linklater, M.IP., for Manawatu, in the House on Wednesday, the Minister of Railways (Hon. W/. A. Veiteh) stated that arrangements could not be made for the night Limited expresses between Wellington and Auckland to stop at Levin. “Levin is admirably served by express trains,” added Mr. Veiteh. “The Napier expresses up and down, the down New Plymouth day express, the Wellington-New Plymouth night expresses, and the mid-day express from Wellington for Auckland all stop a I Levin. In addition to these trains there is a. set-down train following the down night Limited at a. short interval from Palmerston North, and there is also a passenger train stopping at all stations, running ahead of the night Limited express from Wellington to Palmerston North.”

As announced on Tuesday; the night expresses between Wellington and New Plymouth (mentioned by the Minister as of advantage to Levin), are among the services which are to be dispensed with in connection with the Department’s retrenchment scheme.

CHAMBER SUGGESTS FURTHER ATTEMPT. Relative to the above, at Thursday night’s Chamber of Commerlie meeting Mr. R. N. Speirs referred to the fact that Mr. Linklater had made an endeavour to have the Limited trains stopped at Levin. He understood that he had not been successful but thought that the Chamber should take the matter up as It was one of district concern and did not concern Levin alone. Foxton was equally interested as it was not possible for a local resident to visit Wellington, conduct any business there and return the same day in comfort under the present'conditions as a person did not arrive in the city until 11.30 whereas if the Limited stopped it would he possible to reach Wellington by 9.15 a.m. He thought the one stop of the down Limited in the morning would be sufficient as other trains up were quite suitable; It was decided to write Mr. Linklater congratulating him on his effort and expressing the opinion that the matter should again be taken up. It was also resolved to communicate with the Hon. Veiteh on the matter.
