MANAWATU-OROUA RIVER BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. 'The monthly meeting of the Ma-naiwatn-Oroua River Board was held in Palmerston North on Thursday, Mr. W. S. Darter presiding. Also present were Messrs C. H. Spoil's,' R. Law, H. Barber, H. J. T. Hume, E. Harrison and B. G. Gower.
Messrs Moore and Bergin, Foxton, wrote stating that they had advised their clients, Messrs Stevens, Easton and Austin, to arrange for a survey to be made of the land being acquired 'by the board, opposite Koputaroa subdivision. Mr. Easton had asked whether the board’s engineer would arrange for the spoil from the new channel to he deposited on the northern side of the cutting. It was feared that if the spoil were hanked on the southern side it would force the river northward into their clients’ land, and cause considerable erosion and damage. The engineer (Mr. F. C. Hay) stated that the writers’ wishes had already been met.
'The engineer reported that the contract for earthworks at Coley’s bend, three miles from Shannon, had been completed. Extra work necessitated to minimise flood risk during construction, and to strengthen the junction of the new stopbank with the old 'one had been authorised at a cost of £3l 14/6. The contract price for the job was £1356, Mr. R. Coley, Shannon, advised that the well-borer had started operations, and the cut was practically finished. An account for £7 for damages caused to young grass through gates being left open and traffic going across was forwarded. It was decided to reply stating that, on completion of the work in the 'vicinity, the claim would be considered.
