HOROWHENUA ELECTRIC POWER BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the llorowhenua Electric Power Board was held in Levin last week. OTAKI SHOW PRIZES. Mr. C. 11. Isaacson, secretary of the Otaki Horticultural Society, wrote on behalf of his committee, thanking the Board for the offer of a, donation of £2 2/- for prizes for cooking done by electricity. He slated that the society had decided to hold two shows this year —one about September and the other early in November. It was intended to make cookery a special feature at the latter show, and they would prefer to offer the Board’s prizes then, if the donors were agreeable. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr. Morse, the letter was received, and the suggestion as to the allocation of the prizes was accepted. LIGHTING AT MANAWATU HEADS.
(Correspondence was received from the Foxton Harbour Board with reference to extended hours of street lighting at Manawalu Heads. The secretary stated that some time ago the Harbour Board wrote on this subject, and as nothing more was heard from them lie communicated with the Board again on May 20th, reminding them that an all-night service could he arranged for the street lamps at an extra charge of 5/- per lamp per annum. A reply had now 1 been received stating 1 hat the Harbour Board were prepared to accept this offer, and intimating tlicir desire for the same terms to be applied in the case of. any additional lights that might be erected. A resolution was passed receiving the letter. TREASURER’S REPORT. The treasurer reported as follows: — “The accounts paid during the month and now submitted for continuation total £3009 16/11, and are made up as follows: —Imprest payments for wages, salaries, railway freights, etc., £761 1/9; motor registration fees, £43 5/-; A.M.P. Society, interest on £BO,OOO loan, £2205 10/2; total £3009 16/11. The accounts to be passed amount to £IOB9 8/11. “During the month 55 “cut off” notices and 80 “reminders,” were sent to consumers who were in arrears with tlicir electricity accounts. The “cut off” notices had the desired effect, the consumers either paying the account in Cull or paying the greater part and making satisfactory arrangements for the balance. In only two eases was it necessary to disconnect the 'power. One of these paid subsequently and was re-connected.
“The control of arrears is an important feature of the office work, and in this connection I should like to mention that the book-keeping machine recently installed has proved most useful. At each monthly balance the operator takes out the balances from the ledger cards, the machine printing the number of the account and the balance owing. AU that is then necessary to obtain a complete arrears list is to fill in the consumer’s name opposite the number. This is a distinct improvement, and saves considerable time as compared with the old method.”
■The chairman moved the adoption' 'of the report, and this was seconded tbv Mr. Seifert. BE-COKNDOOTMO FEE INCREASED.
Mr Bienkhorn asked if any expense was entailed in cubting-olf and re-connecting the supply where consumers had been in arrears; if so, then a suitable fee should be stated on the notice. He thought that such an intimation would have a desirable effect.
The Chairman: We charge a fee of 2s Gd. It is not enough. Mr Petherick: In the Hutt dis-trict-it is s*.
It was decided, on the motion of Mr Bienkhorn, seconded by Mr ,Pethericlk, that the fee for re-con-necting cut-off services lie increased to ss.
The Treasurer’s report was adopted.

On June 3rd a tree, which was being felled on. property at Tiro Tiro Hoad, Levin, was allowed to fall on the 11,000-. volt line, bringing down one wire, which caused a 1
dislocation on that circuit for about one and a-half hours. The engineer asked for authority to purchase the following poles: — Twenty-five 33ft., 75 28ft, 150 24 ft, aghinst prices being received, the approximate cost being £382.
