Air. C. Anderson, who has been away from Foxton for some time, returned last week and is residing with his parents, Air. and Airs. Anderson, of Coley Street.
AH’s. At. A. Rawlins, “Riverslea” Bright water Terra ee, Palmerston N., to-day celebrates her 951 li birthday. She is well and takes a keen interest in all that is going on aboul her. The death occurred at Palmerston N. Hospital this morning of a well-known local resident in the person of MY Thomas J.oe, nged 75 years. The funeral will he held at Foxton 10-nioi'vow afternoon. Tn conversation with the chairman of ilie Palmerston North Hospital Board, Dr. Afurray, a member of the British Rugby touring team, evinced keen interest in (he hospital system of this Dominion and intends visiting the leading hospitals before returning to Ireland.
While addressing -1000 members of Fascist recreational societies at St. Damascus Church court-yard in Rome, the Pope narrowly escaped death when the glass face of the huge clock above the papal throne became dislodged from the case. Its fall was miraculously checked b\ the massive clock hands. Attendants rushed and tied the hands, preventing their rotation and thus holding up the glass.
The Governor-General lias received the following message from the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs, in reply to the telegram which his Excellency sent on the occasion of his Ala jest y's birthday: —“His Afajcsty the King commands me to convey his sincere thanks for the message of loyally ami good wishes received on the occasion of his birthday, from you and the Government and people of New Zealand.”
The Rev. Father ATcDermoit, local parish priest, has received notice of Iris transfer to the Eltlmm parish and will leave for his new -pitere of labour at an early dale. Apart from his pastoral work, Fn liter Af.eDermol 1 has taken .-i keen interest in Rugby football and has been an active member of the local Golf Club. His departure, will he regretted by a large circle of friends within and outside the church whose best wishes will follow him in the Taranaki district. His successor will Ice the Rev. Father Brennan, assistant priest in Alasterton.
The death occurred at Wellington last week of a well-known Ng.-ii-taliu ohieftainess, Mrs. Mnriwai Morrison, 0.8. E., in her nStli year. Well-informed in the lore of the Xgaitnlm section of the .Maori people, ihe late Mrs. Morrison could iilso trace her ancestry back to the remote past. Ancient songs, traditions, and the etiquette of her tribe wore recalled and observed by her, especially at tangis and on other ceremonial occasions. During Ihe Great War her services to ibe country were recognised by the award to her of the honour of 0.8. E., which was regarded as a distinction, not only to herself, hut also to all Maori womanhood. The funeral took place at Kaiapoi on Sunday.
