He thought the licensee should he more careful in the oonuuef of his hotel.

Mr. Maekie (Balls) who appeared for* the licensee, said that his client had pleaded guilty on the oe■•isiou under review. He had been bleed in an awkward situation. I In* races had been on at Feilding on the day in question and a immher of people called in for lunch dtiring the evening. Had the hotel been a town house the licensee would have had the necessary labour lo sene the liquor in the dining room.

The S.AI. remarked that when the hotel was visited nine people were found in the bar and the licensee :ml an assistant; had been discovered busily engaged in serving liquor to them. -Mr. Alaekic: T can assure you, A our Worship, that votir words of warning will not fall on deaf ears. When Mr. Berg-iu made application for a license of the Family Hotel, Foxton, for Percy Hubert Hickey, Constable Owen said he had to ob ject In Ihe granting of a license.

Air. Bergin said he understood that the police report would be mila(durable and he would ask for an adjournment for three months only there were legal difficulties in I he way as the application was not lor a renewal of a license hut a straight-out application for a license. The S.AI. said that he thought the Bench could adjourn any application for three months. Counsel for the Public Trustee (owners of the property concerned) quoted the Licensing Act in support oL Air. Bergiti’s contention. I he S.AI. said that the committee would allow the licensee to carry on until the end of June. The police report in Hickey's case was 100 bad lo grant an application for .( publican s license. He had been convicted for after hour trading, being drunk in charge of a’ car, (here was domestic trouble and drunkenness in the hack yard oftho hotel went to show that Hickey i m-oiiraged a certain trade about i lie hotel that was not altogether desirable. Only last court day ’here had been a ease against him when he had been very lucky that ihe pi dice had charged him with permitting drunkenness on his premises instead of selling liquor to boarders in a stale of drunkenness. I he committee would only agree to adjournment in order to allow Hickey to get someone else to take over (he hotel. He hail no chance °l obtaining a license himself.

il was decided to adjourn the meeting until the doth of jane when I he case will again .he dealt with, i'llAIRAIA X’S (’(IALMBNT.
