The old saying that many a. true word is spoken in jest came true recently. Miss Ilill, who was on a visit to friends in Tabapau, after riding to the meet of the Daunevirko hounds, in the initial run was one of Ihe first in at the kill, and had to go through the ordeal of being “blooded” by the deputymaster (Mr. J. McDonald), who remarked: “Dinnn rub it off, lassie, or sure ye’ll ha’e bad luck.” Later in the day the same young lady had a nasty fall over a wire fence. A novel suggestion for the prevention of level crossing accidents was made to the Prime Minister (the Hon. 0. W. Forbes) by Mr. W. A. Abbott, of Poroii, near Whangarei, states the “Bay of Plenty Times.” Tt was that on each side of railway crossings the*road should be laid for about three chains in concrete with a corrugated surface. Mr. Abbott said this would .provide a warning of the proximity of a crossing which the motorist could not fail to notice, even in the dark. It would compel him to slow down to above five miles an hour. Mr. Forbes said the idea appeared to be quite a good one. He advised Mr. Abbott to submit it to the Minister of Railways.
