MEN THE BEST COOKS.

Like the Navy, the Army and Lhe Air Force, the higher branches of eoo'kory arc, seemingly, man’s special preserve. lias anyone ever heard of a famous woman chef,

“Why do women lag so far behind men in iirst-ciass cookery/" This was one of the questions 1 asked an authority at the opening' (by Mr. Authur Greenwood, Minister of Health) of the Universal Cookery and Food Exhibition at ()lympia, states a London writer, “French experts say it is because w omen have not mathematical powers and no patience of the particular kiud needed Lo watch over and wait for results,” 1 was told. “Also they do not acquire the nec-

cssary technical skill combined with artistry, which .is essential.” As 1 went, round the vast, hall, which was filled with delicious looking - food, 1 met several of these Kings of the Kitchen. One section of the exhibition was devoted to what appeared to be marvellous nrehiteelirnl models, baskets of realistic llowers which were really chocolate, marzipan and sugar, and such prosaic items of ibe larder ns raw turnips and mutton -fat. I stood entranced before “The Approach of Winter" —A Swiss chalet set amidst, dark pines in a snowy lattdsaepe. '•Kill’ll*er' along was a big choco - late windmill. II was the only ‘‘working" model in the exhibition. There was a huge sugar skyscraper. It, was a. faithful model of the Royal Yoi'k Hotel, Tomato, by Air 11. As! ley, and was linished in a gale at sea. The pick of these exhibits, however, was a farmyard scene with a rending tree and a small cottage und animals all tinted artistically —and all carved from mutton fat. “The standard of amateur domestic cookery is certainly better limn it was last year," said one of the judges to me. “And there lire more entries. It isn 1 bad when women take the trouble to send in lour entirely different specimens,” site said, “and they an* getting more original.”
