BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting' of the Foxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening. Reports were read and dealt wilh as follows: — GAS MANAGER’S REPORT. The gas manager (Mr C. Maelean) reported that two cookers were ini ailed during last month and two blocked services cleaned nut. — Adopted. ROAD FOREMAN'S REPORT. The road foreman (Mr A. G. Iluntley) reported that during the past month the road staff had been engaged on the following works : Cleaning drains in Russell, .Tanks, and Putter Sts. and Norbiton Rd,; removing fence at junction of Johnston and Purcell Sts., grading Moutoa, Avenue, Norbiton Rds., No. fi Line, Duncan, Spring, Purcell, Jouks and Robinson Sts. The foreman reported (hat it was proposed t > give Purcell St. a top dressing of blinding material at the first opportunity and lo still further widen the metalled portion of .Teaks St., by the frequent use of the grader.—Ad opted. WATER WORKS REPORT. The waterworks foreman reported as follows During the month eight chains of sewer was relaid in Russell St., where it was found necessary to lay four and a half ( bains of reinforced concrete to place the pipes on as the bottom v as found to be quick sand. Some < f the staff were kept on during the month {lushing: the sand out of the (.[her sewers. At the pumping station 2,300,000 gallons of water was pumped. —Adopted. CORRESPONDENCE was read and dealt with as follows: From Messrs Corv-AVrighl and Salmon, Auckland, enclosing a quotation for Kent Venturi Orivent meter for the waterworks. The cost of the calculator, which would show the number of gallons pumped into the tower, was £2lO. —Received.
From the Department of Internal Affairs, forwarding a. copy of the model fire escape by-laws. —Received.
From the District Engineer, in reply to the Council’s letter, stating that the sum of £l3 would he available for grassing the Courthouse plots as soon as the work was done. —Left in the hands of Cr. D. R. Jiarron.
From the Minister of Internal Affairs, notifying the Council that a public inquiry would he held in Palmerston N. on Alay 29th, for the purpose of hearing evidence to de{ermine the boundaries of the region comprising the Borough of Palmerston N. and surrounding districst, with regard to the Regional Town Planning scheme. —The Mayor appointed to. attend the conference, !o be ■ accompanied by the Town Clerk,
From the Palmerston N. Hospital Board, enclosing a copy of the Board’s financial estimates for the year 1930-31, and pointing out that rhe levy on the Foxton Borough would lie £204 7/4 for maintenance and £37 12/3 for Capital expendil ure.—Received.
From the Foxton Harbour Board enclosing a copy of a special resolution passed at last%iontli’s meeting relative to the levying of a rate. —Received.
The Horowhen.ua Power Board wrote, acknowledging receipt of the Council's letter in reference to the use <>f the waterworks pump, agreeing 10 permit the motor to be used between 7 p.m. and C a. ill., except in eases of emergency, at a charge of -id per unit. —Received. PUTTER. STREET CUTTINGS. The Mayor said his attention had been drawn to the narrowness of two cuttings in Putter St. which only allowed one-way traffic. He suggested Uiat the road foreman
submit a report as to whether the cuttings could be widened by setting the fences back.
(Jr. Robinson said be doubted if iwo cars a day passed over the road.
Councillors thought the road quite safe for the amount of traffic on it, but it was decided to obtain a report on the matter from Lbe i cud foreman.
INCREASED PETROL TAX. A motion, moyed by Cr. Cowley ami seconded by Cr. Barron, was moved to the effect that the Council protest against the proposed increase in the petrol tax. The motion was carried but the Mayor and Crs. Lucinsky, Ross, and R. J. Thompson voted against it. GENERAL. An account of £3O 0/8 for beautifying work carried out prior to the Council talcing over the assets of the now defunct Beautifying Society, certified to ,by Cr. Barron, late secretary, was passed for payment. The Clerk reported that he was preparing data in regard to the Council's application for a reduction in the lire insurance premiums in Poxton. It was decided to accept a quotation of £8 15/- for papering rooms in the gas manager’s house.
