OTAKI (9) v .FOXTON (3). The match between the nbove clubs, played at 01aid on Saturday in glorious weather and oi; a fast ground, did both teams credit, and Otaki, on the day, was deserving of their win although iFoxton, as far as the back devision «s concerned, played well. (From the kick-off to call of time there was not a dull moment and play throughout was particularly brisk. Otaki had the advantage in serum work, but Foxion’s backs were superior lo the locals and their passing was crisp and clean. Otaki started the game going but were immediately called back for a breach, and the scrum at half-way was well contested. However, Otaki secured the advantage and Sinkinson sot his backs in cl ion. He passed to Merwood who kicked well up field. From a scrum Barnes, who played a solid game, sent the ball out till finally it reached Moses, who, after a good run, sent to Procter, who kicked to Meta at full-lmck. The latter sent hack a splendid line kick. Foxton headed a loose forward rush and Stevenso joined issue and raced up lield to place Otaki on the defensive. Meta saved by another well-judged kick. Then came another passing bout bv the Foxton backs and Moses made a strong run and kicked. Meta returned well up Held. This was hacked up by an Otaki forward rush, which resulted in the home team attacking. A five-yard serum followed, but Otaki was penalised and Foxton relieved by a good kick. ■Otaki again pressed but Taylor playing well, returned to mid-field and then came an exciting time. Meta was beaten by the bounce of the ball but Simkinson rushing hack saved. A forward rush was slopped by Foxton marking, and Procter and Taylor put in fine work, till Merwood intercepted. Backed up by Wallace, Otaki gained the advantage and Merwood eventually raced over. Meta mised the bar. 3—o. Otaki confined on the attack, but Taylor and Stevenson, playing with good judgment, relieved and in turn attacked. Stevenson and Thompson backed up by Robinson, carried the ball lip field but were stopped by Mela. Fine back play by Foxton followed and a dash up field saw the Otaki line endangered. Otaki had an anxious few moments, and from a free kick Taylor kicked a nice goal. 3 —3. An interchange of kicks followed, Stevenson doing the best. Otaki backs then failed to pass and Foxton forwards, sweeping down lield, set a merry pace until Sinkinson returned with the ball at his toe. Kno’ka and D’.Uh then helped eon- | sidcrably. The latter just missed a try, after which the spell ended. The second spell was a good one, and all were treated to interesting football. At times play was hard and fast, and until well bn the game was in the balance. Foxton attacked from the kick off, and then Taylor marked and had an unsuccessful shot at goal which caused Otaki to accept a force. Otaki responded with a passing rush, but some of the backs proved part and parcel of the ball and lost opportunities. While on the attack Marino, who played with dash and determination, potted, but missed the bar by inches. Procter retaliated by a good run; the tackling of fho local backs being decidedly weak. Wallace, who was playing well, went off at top pace and was the means of forcing- Foxton back. Meta then put in a smart run but Taylor saved. Then came a nice passing rush by the Otaki backs and Robinson ended the effort by just missing a score. The attack was maintained and Merwood was streaking for the line as the whistle went due to an infringement. Then came smart play bv Sinkinson, who passed to Merwood, to Marino, who handed to Meta. The latter raced over at the corner and scored, but failed to add the major points. Ala - rino was shortly after seen in action; then came smart play by Ogier who touched clown. The try however, was disallowed. Robinson then made a hold bid for the line, but failed. Two five-yard scrums on the Foxton line saw Otaki hacks lighting hard to score, but the defence was sound. Otaki, at this stage held sway, although break-a-ways by Foxton through Otaki’s weak tackling, saw the latter’s line in danger. Enok-a and Marino returned to the attack and the latter rushed over to score just before the whistle sound,ed. Meta failed at goal. 9 —3. . ci (Saylor was very reliable and ,< kicked with fine judgment. Thompson,, Robinson and Procter bad a dot of work to do but did well, while u jAteyenson, Hartley and Barnes •showed their worth. They all passed well and beat Otaki in this department. The forwards worked hard. The gate takings totalled £5 9/-.
