ACCIDENT AT SHANNON.
PASSENGER DRAGGED BY TRAIN. ■ • An accident occurred at Shannon yesterday afternoon just before 3 o'clock, which at one time appeared almost certainly to be fraught with fatal results. The slow train from Palmerston N. pulled up at. the station, but the carriages attached were a long way on tbe northern side of the platform. Two passengers, casual railway workers, left the train and walked down to the station. When the whistle blew for starting they commenced to walk back. One of them reached the carriages safely, but the other, whose name is Green, found that the train had considerable way on. He grabbed the rails of the carriage platform, but could not get on to the platform, the train being on the second set of rails. Porter Harvey seized liim and shouted to him to let go, but he did not do so and they
were dragged down past the southern end of the station, where Green fell oil’ with the porter, to the horror, of the spectators, apparently under the wheels. When picked up it was found that the wheels had just grazed Green’s left foot, the toes of which were broken and the foot badly crashed. He was also suffering from severe shock and braises. Dr Millar was in Shannon at the time and attended to the sufferer who was removed to the Palmerston N. Hospital.
