COMMUNITY LIGHTING.
BUSINESS FEOFDE CONFER WITH ENGINEER. At last meeting el the Fox to u ,Chamber ot Comeree, the question ol' community lighting- was discussed and it was decided to communicate with the Power Hoard and ascertain, the cost and details, Yesterday, Mr Smith, the Horo•whenua Power Hoard's Engineer, visited Foxton and conlerred with members oi the Chamber oi Commerce. Those present were Messrs J. K. Hornblow (President), D. Christie, G. F. Smith, S. Mattar, j. A. Aitchison, i. Corn and W. Trueamm
M rHornblow welcomed Mr- Smith and referred to the excellent service rendered by the Board throughout the district and paid a tribute to the Board's stall’ in attending to eommunictions with promptitude. in his opinion the Horowheuua PowerBoard was probably the most enterprising and best administered Board in the Dominion.
Mr Smith thanked the Chairman ior his appreciative references. He said the Board was out to render efficient service and did its best to attend promptly to complaints. He was pleased to know that its services in this coneetion were appreciated. in connection with community lighting, he instanced what had been done in Levin. Community Lighting was in his opinion, a line asset to any town, and was well worth the expense incurred. nl this • connection shop fronts could be illuminated either with one or two lights or in groups. The cost would be £3 12/- per light per year, with n reduction, oir more than theree lights and a further reduction if paid in advance. The service included maintenance and installation. The lights, which brilliantly illuminated the window displays, were hept goinb every night including Sundays and holidays up til about midnight. The lamps were of 200 c.p., enclosed in globes and were in proper alignment and uniform. . in answer to Mr Christie, ,Mr Smith said that if a shop became vacant the contract for the light automatically ceased. in answer to other queMaons, Mr
Smith said that the (price quoted included capital cost and maintenance. The minimum rate for inside charge would still obtain, but, said Air Smith, we hope to be able at an early dal.-, to lake a reduction in the lighting charges. The rate quoted foveommunity lighting was the i lion pest in the Dominion. Joint contracts could be arranged between small shop owners where only one light was required. Both sides of the street would be served. On the motion of -Mr Christie, Mr fjmitb was accorded a hearty vote of thanks and was assured that the matter would lie discussed at to-night’s meeting of the 'Chamber when lie had no doubt that a. sufficient number would consent, to ndopt the system. Air Smith, in acknowledging the vote said that provided the Chamber adopted the scheme, the Board would send nil official to canvass the business people and provided a sufficient number signed up the svsicm would be installed with the least possible delay.
