CRUSHED BY CUSTOMS DUTIES

Speaking at the Pig Breeders' Conference at Palmerston North mi Wednesday, the lion. Ed. Newman said the poultry industry is being gradually crushed out of existence owing- to high prices of feeding stuff owing to customs duties. According to the Inst Official Year Book, poultry per head of population in 1028 was tin* lowest figure since ISO 1. Nearly Kid,ooo people are interested in Ibis industry, lie said, and many of them are small tanners and working men, the classes requiring encouragement. England poultry imports in 1027, he said, totalled 22} million.:, sterling and of this huge sum New Zedla ml secured only £1.1.04. To give an idea of the relative importance of the markets in the I idled Kingdom for pig and poultry prodm-ls, the following figures boning the imports of beef, mutton, and la mb are ill list ra 1 ive :
Pig- products 50,353,758 Poultry jpiiodueis 22,232,3 58 Beef 34,054,407 Million 0,221,8-10 Lamb 13,707, .883 It will lie seen that the imports of .pig-products exceed beef, mutton, and lamb combined, and the imports ot poulirv-produrls exceed million and lamb. In l lie l .S. of America poultry is the second largest agricultural in<ilist rv and at one time was the largest agricultural industry. If I lie eiisioms duties were removed, the poultry industry will take a new lease of life, said Mr. Newman, and will bring in a lot of ■:i'is! !o our national mill.
